After five and a half years, I think I might be done here.

Over the weekend I received an email from Tumblr informing me, not for the first time, that I was one copyright violation away from having my account deleted. I emailed Tumblr to ask what occasioned the email, pointing out that since the posts get deleted before the notices are sent then I have no way of knowing which posts are even causing the problem.

To my surprise, they wrote back and apologized, saying the email had been sent in error and that they’d be looking into the problem.

Then this morning I got another notice that one of my posts had been deleted. The person who issued the complaint was the same person who has issued DMCA complaints against me six other times in the last twelve months. The last time it happened I tracked down his email address and sent a polite email, pointing out that

a) I credit all models, studios, and sources whenever I post commercial porn
b) I always link back to the original source
c) Watermarked stills are freely given away by studios to porn bloggers every day
d) I’d be happy to remove whatever he wanted if he told me what companies he was actually representing

His response was terse and surely copied and pasted:

"We represent almost 500 different adult entertainment brands world-wide, many of whom ask that we report any images our staff finds online unless it can be clearly demonstrated that the poster is licensed by the copyright holder to use or publicly display the image…  We report between two and four million infringements each year.  It’s simply not possible for us to flag your particular Tumblr account such that you are sent special notification if we find an infringing image on your Tumblr.  It’s a matter of scale."

He went on to say that I should contact a copyright lawyer if I had any further questions.

So this guy, who claims to file a minimum of 5,480 complaints per day, is basically going to have my Tumblr shut down whenever his robots feel like it. I could write a whole longform essay about how moronic this whole process is, but instead I think I’m just going to go on hiatus for a while. Maybe Naked Pictures Of Your Dad will be here when I come back. Maybe it won’t.

There’s still some stuff queued up, but if you want to stay in touch, drop me an email.
