The second musician to make the list, the young Elvis Costello was sneering and gangly with very stereotypically British teeth, but his political swagger, clever songwriting, and probably also his glasses landed him a spot on this Hot 100.*
(*He actually made the Billboard Hot 100 in the US three times, with “Every Day I Write The Book” and “Veronica,” which makes sense, but also with “The Only Flame In Town,” a song I’m pretty sure I’ve never, ever even heard of before except as the least memorable song on his best-of.)
