76. Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988)
Born in Brooklyn to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother, Basquiat emerged as a graffiti artist in the late seventies and by the mid-eighties he was the toast of New York, hanging out with Andy Warhol and, rather predictably for a successful New Yorker in the eighties, doing lots of drugs. He died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27.
